After London and Berlin it is the third largest city in the European Union. The metropolitan area of this city is the third largest after London and Paris in Europe. The area of the city is around 604.3 km2 (233.3 sq mi).
The location of the city is on the River Manzanares which is in the centre of the community of Madrid and the country. It includes the city of Madrid, the extended villages and suburbs and the conurbation. Surrounding this city are the autonomous communities like Leon and Castile as well as Castile La Mancha. Being the capital of Spain, residence of Spanish monarch, seat of government, the city is also the economic, political and cultural centre of Spain. The present mayor is Ana Botella who is from the People’s Party.
